Last Time Out |
2008 Spring Bear
Mathew harvests his first animal with his Hoyt bow, and takes his first bear ever.
Two rookie bear hunters armed with our Hoyt bows, a Sony consumer camera, the Double Bull, a couple Bear Sense "12 miles of Dead Fish!",
a can of Bear Bomb "Beaver castor" and a shotgun for back up.......with only 5 opportunities to get out.
Day 1 found us scouting of course, lots of walking and a few hours on the trusty Polaris Sportsman.
We scouted some GREAT Moose hunting areas that we hope to get back to this year as well.
We found a decent bear baiting spot, set up our barrel (courtesy of Chris T. from HCAB....THANKS again!) of bait and came back that evening...
.....to nothing more than the drumming of a Ruffy somewhere behind us.
Day 2, four days later, had us looking at an untouched barrel of popcorn, oats, dog food, KFC grease and syrup.
Time to set up the second barrel and spent some more time scouting.
We found a second location that we felt would be better than the first a few miles away, so we baited and came back later that day to sit at it.
We felt we had some company from the noises behind us, but it was extremely windy so we pulled out early.
Day 3 brought us back to check on both baits, only to find neither hit, so we were off to scout again.
This time we travelled quite a bit further and found some good bear tracks (next year's bait area)....

..and cruised the rest of the evening checking out the local deer population....HEALTHY without a doubt!
Day 4, a week later, once again showed us no action...so we pulled the one bait hoping the other would bring us a bear the next time out,
which would be our LAST time out.
Day 5 We waited a week and a half before going back, so we were just a little excited and VERY hopefull.
We lucked out this time as the bait was hit, with just enough left to possibly bring him back.
Not a lot of tracks to tell size, but lots of sign that told us it was a bear.

Our last two scent sticks and a can of "Sow in heat", the Double Bull set up with our Muzzy tipped Easton arrows nocked onto our Hoyts,
we were determined to get a bear harvest on film tonight!

We decided that if a GOOD bear came in, it was the quickest to the draw.......anything else would give Mat the option of taking his first bear.
For those of you that feel it's a small bear, PLEASE keep in mind that Mat is 7'8" and 475lbs. :-)
We accomplishesd the goal we had set out, a bear harvest on film in 5 days.

We learned a lot and are really looking forward to next year......and maybe even some Bear hunting this fall.
And by the way, we promise you a Pope and Young Bear next year with some even more exciting ground footage!
